Seller’s Frequently Asked Questions
Who are we?
Cottage Baker is a unique online local marketplace that connects bakers, artisan products makers, cottage food operators and similar small food businesses directly to customers who are interested in hand-made confections, healthy treats and unique baked goods. Unique to Cottage Baker are the tools provided to sellers specifically designed to help them manage their time and business.
What can I sell?
Please refer to the Product Categories Table.
How can I earn a licensed seller badge?
Cottage Baker assigns license badges to sellers to help their products stand out as being from a licensed seller, or one who has completed food processor training. To earn a badge, you must provide your license number and expiry date during the registration process, or by updating the information in your Store Settings. We also require proof of your license in order to verify it. This can be provided by uploading an image or PDF file during registration or in your Store Settings. Please email Cottage Baker whenever there is a change in your license status. Once we verify your license the appropriate license seller badge will automatically appear on all your products.
What about taxes?
Sales tax is usually not required unless the food is served and consumed at the point of sale. Cottage Baker does not collect any sales tax or other taxes on your behalf. You are responsible for paying any local, state or federal taxes resulting from the sale of your products. If you earn more than $20,000 in a tax year through Cottage Baker we are required by law to provide you a 1099 form once it is made available to us. You should contact a tax professional to help determine your tax liability.
Can anyone get my home address?
Although Cottage Baker uses maps heavily, we do not allow users to zoom in to see your actual location. If you support Local Pickup, it is your responsibility to communicate the address of the pickup location to your customer using our Messaging system.
How do I get paid?
Cottage Baker uses Braintree by PayPal to transfer funds directly into your bank account. In order to do this you need to enter your bank account information and it needs to be verified by Braintree. This can take from a few minutes to a few days. You will receive an email notification as well as a notice in your Shop Settings dashboard when your account is verified. Please note that you can create product listings, but will not be able to publish them for purchase, until you have selected a Seller Plan and your account is verified. If you are experiencing a problem with getting your account verified please contact support from within your Shop Settings dashboard.
How long does it take to get paid?
Cottage Baker understands the urgency in getting paid, so we have developed a system that allows you to control how quickly after initial payment funds are released to your bank account. In order for funds to be released you must first mark an order as fulfilled. Once fulfilled, the funds will be released to your account based on the “Days after fulfillment to allow refund request” entry in your Store Settings. For example, if “Days after fulfillment to allow refund request” is set to 2, then the funds will be transferred to your account during the scheduled nightly run two days after you fulfill the order. Please note that your customers will not be able to easily request a refund after the funds have been released to you, so choose carefully.
How is the delivery charge calculated?
The delivery charge is calculated based on the distance in miles between the customer’s delivery address and the seller’s store location. You determine the costs per range of distances for each of your products.
Which payment gateways can customers use?
Customers are currently required to use PayPal Credit Card at checkout. PayPal supports all major credit and debit cards.
About your seller’s subscription
What happens to my products when my subscription is cancelled?
When you cancel your subscription, or payment of your subscription fails, your shop will be in “pending cancellation” state until the next billing date. Your subscription privileges will remain in effect until the end of the current term. If you cancel your subscription, your credit card will not be charged again unless you manually re-subscribe. Once your subscription is cancelled by you or lack of payment, your products will become “Pending” and will not be available for purchase. You will still be able to log in to your Shop Dashboard and view your order history and products. However, you will not be able to publish products for sale until you resubscribe.
What happens to my products when I downgrade my subscription (e.g. removing features, reducing the number of listings )?
When you downgrade the number of listings to a number that is less than the number of products you have listed, all of your products will become Pending until you select which one you want to publish for sale. If you remove a feature any products with that feature will become Pending and will no longer be available for sale.
Can I suspend my subscription?
We don’t support suspending a subscription, but you can cancel your subscription anytime and resubscribe when you are ready to open your shop again. If you re-subscribe within a 12 month period, we will not remove the content of your shop.
Is my subscription fee refundable?
If as a Seller you request a refund less than 30 days of paying for your Paid Plan, we will refund to your verified funding account all payment you have made to Cottage Baker. Refunds may take up to 30 days to process. We will also cancel your Paid Plan if you have not already done so.
If you do not request a refund within 30 calendar days of the signup date of your Paid Plan, all payments you have made to Cottage Baker are non-refundable.
These terms also apply to Paid Plans with free trial periods.
What if I need more than 50 active listings?
If you need more than 50 listings, please contact support and we will create a custom plan for you.
